The Persall Story

Back in the early 1980s, a pair of brothers Clarence and Doug Persall, along with Clarence’s son Brad thought it would be handy to fix the few low spots in their fields. The fields had been previously tiled with large tile but a few problem spots remained.  They did not have a very large tractor so they decided that smaller tile could be installed by the tractor they already owned. The problem was that there was no tile in production that was small enough to accomplish this.

Then in 1984 Don Hillborne was an engineer from OMFRA brought 7/8 plastic core tubing and asked them to build a drainage plow small enough to lay this tile.  So the three men sat in the shop with a piece of chalk and drew a plan on the cement floor. They built the first prototype using a 3 point hitch blade from which they removed the blade, and built a bracket to hold the shoe from the floor design. This was the first Persall Mini Tiler.

For several years they laid the 7/8th tubing and had success with draining the problem areas in their fields. Progress continued until Arm Tech (Big O) started production on 1 1/2 dies to make 1 1/2 tiles with pre cut slits. Clarence, Brad, Doug then move on to building the next size bigger of tile plow which could do 4 feet deep and lay the 1 1/2 pipe. Neighbours in the area starting wanting the men to either do tiling in their fields or build them a tile plow.

In 1987 the three men formed their company known as Persall Mini Tiler Ltd and they started manufacturing and selling the plows.  By 1992 Clarence’s other son Jason, and Doug’s son Scott wanted to start farming with the others and so they split the farming practice up. Doug and Scott took the chicken production and some workable acreage. Clarence, Jason and Brad took the tile drainage business and cash crops.

By 1995 business had grown so much that there was demand for a bigger plow. This resulted in the 5 foot plow. Which could lay 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch tile sizes.

In 1997 they were approached by Denny Bell, from Indiana USA, Denny owned Agri-Logic, the producer of Case and Ag Leader’s early yield mapping software. He wanted to buy the rights to manufacture the Persall Mini Tiler in the United States. Clarence, Brad, and Jason discussed this move for the business and in the end they sold the rights.

There was defined rules for the next 10 years and the Persall Mini Tiler was sold only in Canada by the Persall family.  Denny’s copy of the plow was marketed as the soil max gold digger and sold only in the USA.  After the 10 years the agreement was void and either plow can be sold in Canada or the USA.

Business carried on with the sales of several plows and stringer carts until 1999 when they started manufacturing the 6 foot plow as well. This larger plow could lay 4, 6, 8, and 10 inch tile sizes.

Business continued strong and as usual until Clarence passed away in 2007. This lead Brad and Jason to change some of the business practices. Brad took over the plow manufacturing and changed the name to Persil Mini Tiler Inc. Jason took over the majority of the cash crop business and started his own business Pristine Gourmet - Persall Fine Foods Co., based in Waterford, On.

In 2017 Brad decided to devote more time for cash cropping and assisting Jason with the Pristine Gourmet Oils productions. This lead to the tough decision to sell Persall Mini Tiler business. In June 2017, Chuck and Becky Mattice purchased Persall Mini Tiler Inc. Brad is assisting them with learning the productions and use of the plows. Brad will also be assisting with sales for the next several years.

Chuck and Becky look forward to producing the quality of plows that Brad and the Persall team have been providing for the last 30 years. They decided to make a name change from Persall Mini Tiler to the Persall Max Tiler now that both models are capable of installing full sized tile.

We look forward to serving farmers with the quality tile plows that the Persall name has been known for!
